Dallas Tamaira has released his newest single ‘Leaning’, the first introduction to his upcoming EP, which will be his first full solo work in over 20 years.
Born in Otautahi of Ngati Tuwharetoa and Pakeha descent, Dallas (aka Joe Dukie) was raised in the small coastal town of Kaikoura before rising to worldwide acclaim as lead vocalist of the iconic group Fat Freddy’s Drop. Twenty years on, The Drop are seen as one of the most successful New Zealand acts of the 21st Century.
During the pandemic, with Fat Freddy’s Drop unable to tour, Dallas found a new phase of personal creativity. For the self-proclaimed introvert, with nothing to do but write and create, Dallas began working on brand new solo music with long-time friend and award-winning producer Devin Abrams (Shapeshifter, Drax Project, Pacific Heights).
For an aritst who has delivered countless exquisite performances over the years, ‘Leaning’ takes Dallas into a new world of sounds and spaces. Musically explorative, the track sees Dallas as a vocal voyager in an atmospheric audio landscape created by producer Devin Ambrams. Dallas’ deep and soulful voice draws listeners in and captivates them to his story, before then blowing their minds with a spacey other-worldly display of sonic fireworks.
“I wrote ‘Leaning’ in the middle of the pandemic,” says Dallas. “It’s essentially a love song about a couple who are trying to make the most of being together in lockdown. It’s about taking the time out to make yourself feel good, while the rest of the world is seemingly falling around you. It’s about enjoying the moments you have with the ones you love today, and not worrying about what tomorrow might bring.”
